How MTL Basketball Works
The League
MTL Basketball is an inclusive in-house league for players of varying skill levels. Teams are made up of West Orange kids and play other West Orange teams, in town. The focus is skill development and learning the game correctly — and making sure everyone has a blast doing it.
Leagues
Two leagues run in the Winter 2026–27 season, each with a boys division and a girls division:
- Elementary School — Grades 4–5, boys league and girls league
- Middle School — Grades 6–8, boys league and girls league; one evaluation night required
If you think your child should play up or down a level, email basketball.mtl@gmail.com and league staff will sort it out.
The Season
The season runs roughly December through March.
- Registration is open now and closes November 10, 2026. The early-bird rate of $110 runs through October 4, 2026; after that it’s $135.
- Middle school evaluations run on five evenings in October and November — see Evaluations. Elementary players don’t need one.
- Practices aim to start in the first or second week of December. How often a team practices depends on its volunteer coaches’ availability — about two nights a week is typical.
- Games begin in January. Elementary games are usually on Sunday afternoons; middle school games are usually on weeknights, Monday through Thursday.
Days and times may shift depending on how many players register in each league.
Making Teams
Middle school teams are built from the evaluation nights so the league stays balanced. Elementary teams are formed mainly by school, though that too depends on how many players sign up from each school. Friend and coach requests aren’t taken for either league.
Everyone running MTL is a volunteer, coaches included, and many of them are barely more than another parent who was handed a bag of gear and a schedule — so please give the team-making process some grace.
On the Sideline
Two requests that keep game day enjoyable for the kids:
- Give it 24 hours. If you disagree with a coaching decision, wait a day before raising it with the coach, and do it away from the kids.
- Please don’t approach a referee about a call. If you believe a game was officiated in a way the league should hear about, email basketball.mtl@gmail.com or use the league contact form.
The full 24-hour rule, and the rest of what we ask of coaches and parents, lives on the MTL Volunteering site.
Where We Play
Evaluations are at Edison Middle School. Practices and games are in West Orange school gyms, and the specific gym can vary through the season — see Gyms.
What You’ll Need
Workout clothes and sneakers. The league provides the basketballs, for evaluations, practices, and games.
Registration
Sign-ups are all in one place on the Register page. Registering before the early-bird deadline saves money, and registering early in general helps the coordinators plan gym time and team counts.
