FAQ
Which league is my child in?
There are two, each with a boys division and a girls division: Elementary School for grades 4–5 and Middle School for grades 6–8. Register for the one that matches your child’s grade this school year — see How It Works.
When are games and practices?
The season runs roughly December through March. Elementary games are usually on Sunday afternoons and middle school games on weeknights, Monday through Thursday. Practices are on weeknights, typically about two a week depending on the coaches’ availability. Days and times may shift depending on how many players register.
Can my child be on a team with a friend, or with a particular coach?
Friend and coach requests aren’t taken. Elementary teams are formed mainly by school, and middle school teams are balanced using the evaluation nights.
How much does it cost?
$135 per player, or $110 with the early-bird rate through October 4, 2026. Current numbers and sign-up links are always on the Register page.
When does registration close?
November 10, 2026. Practices aim to start in the first or second week of December and games begin in January.
Does my child need to attend an evaluation?
Only middle school players, and only one night — pick any of the five dates on the Evaluations page, arrive any time between 6:30 and 8:30 pm, and plan on about 15–20 minutes. It’s how the coordinators make balanced teams, not a tryout. Elementary players skip this step.
My child made the West Orange Travel Team. Can they also play MTL?
Yes. Travel-team players who want to play MTL Basketball too get a discount code, sent directly by West Orange Rec once the travel team is set.
Where are games and practices?
In West Orange school gyms; the specific gym can vary through the season. Evaluations are at Edison Middle School. See Gyms.
What does my child need to bring?
Workout clothes and sneakers. The league provides the basketballs.
I disagree with a call or a coaching decision. What should I do?
Give it 24 hours. MTL asks parents to wait a day before raising a concern about a coaching decision with the coach, away from the kids, and asks that nobody approach a referee about a call. If you believe a game was officiated in a way the league should hear about, email basketball.mtl@gmail.com or use the league contact form. The full 24-hour rule is on the MTL Volunteering site.
Can I help?
Yes — MTL is all volunteers. There are quick interest forms for coaching and sponsoring, and the cross-sport MTL Volunteering guide covers what to expect.
